Michigan Continues in Drought Status, Some Areas Worse Than Others

Michigan Continues in Drought Status, Some Areas Worse Than Others

DROUGHT AREAS It has been over a month for some parts of Michigan since they have received  any rain.  We were lucky and got some about 4-5 days ago, but we could use a lot more.  Scattered showers and thunderstorms formed over he state yesterday afternoon but they all missed my area.  The central regions seem to get most of it.  At least the lawn may not grow that much while we are gone although chances of rain seem to…

Scattered Showers Missed Us On Sunday – Mid Michigan

Scattered Showers Missed Us On Sunday – Mid Michigan

The little rain that we received last week didn’t do much to end the drought in my area, but it did manage to green the grass up enough so that we had to mow.  Fortunately, the unbearable heat is gone and not expected to return.  We will be heading up to our campground Wednesday and the extended forecast sounds quite nice at this time.  Our weather this summer has been quite docile with no bad storms in my area.  In…

More Comfortable Temps On Tap For Mid Michigan

More Comfortable Temps On Tap For Mid Michigan

A local meteorologist is telling us that the remainder of our summer will be on the cool side.  I certainly have no problem with that.  Seventies and low eighties are perfect in my book.  There were scattered showers and thunderstorms that popped up late yesterday and my area managed to remain in the path of one brief but fairly heavy shower.  It only lasted about ten minutes and dropped 0.04″ of rain.  No rain is expected today and breezes will…

A Welcome Cool-down in Mid Michigan

A Welcome Cool-down in Mid Michigan

Cooler temperatures and low humidity were the norm yesterday but any rain that developed totally missed us.  It was a very pleasant day and today should be much the same.  I think that we can give the AC a rest for awhile.  It has been too hot to get much done around the yard but the extended forecast is for cooler weather the remainder of the summer.  I’m fine with that. Our 8 AM temp is 62°F (17°C), the humidity…

Fog And A Little More Rain for Mid Michigan

Fog And A Little More Rain for Mid Michigan

We woke this morning to dense fog and cloudy skies.  I almost turned off the AC last night and so glad I didn’t.  Our low only fell to around 70°F, and with the fog, there was very high humidity.  It is already clearing a bit but we have more rain in the forecast.  There was 0.03″ in my gauge, just enough to keep the ground moist.  We only saw a few sprinkles yesterday so most of the rain must have…

Sprinkles Continued Through Most Of Our Sunday – Mid Michigan

Sprinkles Continued Through Most Of Our Sunday – Mid Michigan

The rain that we got yesterday seemed rather insignificant but it did measure as 0.06″ in my gauge.  The low pressure that has passed over us is moving ever so slowly to our southeast, and it continues to bring periods of light rain to the area.  Altogether we only got a little over a quarter inch total, the grass has greened up so it did do some good.  I just hope that we don’t have to wait another three weeks…

A Little Drought Relief For Mid Michigan

A Little Drought Relief For Mid Michigan

Although we have only received a quarter of an inch of rain so far, it has revived the lawn a bit.  Yesterday only brought sprinkles but radar is showing  more rain coming from the east.  What we get today should be it for awhile.  Many areas of the state received much more with some getting well over an inch.  We weren’t that lucky. Our 8:45 AM temp is 68°F (20°C), the humidity is 90%, and winds are from the NE…

Finally! Some Much Needed Rain In Mid Michigan

Finally! Some Much Needed Rain In Mid Michigan

The rain began around 9 PM last night and intermittent showers continued throughout the night.  There was 0.20″ in my gauge at 7:30 and it has continued since then.  The  forecast is calling for rain throughout the day and into tomorrow, and we certainly welcome it.  This is our first significant rain since June 28.  There is a low pressure center sitting just to our southwest and is very slowly moving off to the southeast.  My lawn is already looking…

A Promise Of Rain On The Way For Mid Michigan

A Promise Of Rain On The Way For Mid Michigan

Our local forecast is giving us the greatest chance of rain that we have had in about three weeks.  This is supposed to happen on Friday through Sunday.  They seem pretty certain that it’s going to happen and I just hope that we get enough to make a difference.  Our last significant rain was on June 28 with a little over 1/2 inch.  Since then, all we have had are quick showers or sprinkles.  Leaves on the corn are curling…

Storms Galore But Not For Us – Mid Michigan

Storms Galore But Not For Us – Mid Michigan

Severe storm warnings were widespread yesterday afternoon as the cold front moved across lower Michigan.  There were impressive photos of a large shelf cloud that passed over the Pontiac area as storms became severe after forming over us.  I watched this grow from a little blip on the radar to a massive red cell which covered a large area from the thump down to the Detroit area. My son, who lives in Northville near Detroit, said that their tornado sirens…
