Cloudy and Cooler In Mid Michigan

Cloudy and Cooler In Mid Michigan

The high reached the mid 50s yesterday.  Today won’t be quite that balmy but still better than what we had a week ago.  It’s amazing how much the temperatures can fluctuate in one week.  We had light showers yesterday that left 0.19 inches in my gauge, and the Detroit area received a lot more.  There is no precipitation in our forecast for today, but we aren’t expecting to see much sun either.  All of our snow pack is gone and…

Unseasonably Warm In Mid Michigan

Unseasonably Warm In Mid Michigan

The warm temperatures of the past two days have taken care of most of the snow.  The only snow remaining is where the snow banks and deep drifts were.  It was 53°F when I got up this morning and has pretty much remained that warm since then.  We haven’t had any rain yet but it is expected this afternoon.  The temperatures will then start to fall, but remaining much above average.  This weather is wonderful but unseasonable temperatures often bring…

Morning Sun Became Afternoon Clouds – Mid Michigan

Morning Sun Became Afternoon Clouds – Mid Michigan

Temperatures remained in the 40s most of the night, therefore melting most of our snow.  I measured this morning and it averaged out to about 2 inches.  Now it is far less with only about 30% of snow cover.  The snowdrifts and snow banks are all that remains.  Now it will be dark and dreary at 5 o’clock again.  Snow is not a bad thing this time of year as long as it is not overdone. Our 2:30 PM temperature…

First Day Of A Significant Warmup – Mid Michigan

First Day Of A Significant Warmup – Mid Michigan

Today we can look forward to a decreasing snow pack.  I know it will take a few days for it all to melt, but that’s okay.  We should see these wonderful warmer temps right through the weekend.  We have a thin layer of clouds that the sun is trying to peek through, but not quite making it.  There is a substantial breeze blowing making it feel cooler than what it is, but if the sun manages to come out, the…

Warming Up In Mid Michigan

Warming Up In Mid Michigan

Highs are expected to reach the upper 20s today, and we could even see a little sun.  If that happens, my deck may even thaw a bit.  I’m loving the predictions for this upcoming weekend with highs in the low 50s.  That should put a dent in our snow cover.  It seems good to see cars going down our road once again but the county hasn’t been here yet.  Local farmers usually clear the roads before the road commission does…

Finally, An End To The Storm – Mid Michigan

Finally, An End To The Storm – Mid Michigan

I’m thinking that it will be a long time before anyone wishes for a white Christmas again.  Mother Nature certainly granted our wish but went a bit overboard, especially for those living on the west side of the state.  Three days of blizzard conditions is a bit much.  We were spared from that but we did get about 6 inches of snow; frigid temperatures and high winds which made salt on the roads useless.  Today should see highs reaching the…

Winter Storm Almost Over – Mid Michigan

Winter Storm Almost Over – Mid Michigan

Merry Christmas!  It has done nothing but snow for the past 3 days, and today is no exception.  It isn’t heavy but just enough to keep adding the inches.  We now have about 6 inches with 12 inch drifts scattered throughout the yard.  Roads around here are terrible with snow over ice, and it has been so cold that salt doesn’t affect it much.  It should be warm enough today and we should see the roads beginning to thaw.  Every…

Day Two Of Winter Storm – Mid Michigan

Day Two Of Winter Storm – Mid Michigan

Although we only have about 5 inches of snow cover, we have one foot drifts.  My son went out for a test drive to see how the roads were, and he said that they’re all ice covered with snow blowing over them.  We are considering celebrating our Christmas next weekend and are trying to reach my daughter to tell her not to come.  She lives in the Detroit area and conditions there aren’t as bad as here.  We are still…

Blustery And Very Cold – Mid Michigan

Blustery And Very Cold – Mid Michigan

Although our snow amounts aren’t impressive, strong winds are causing havoc on the roads.  A good portion of I-75 is closed between Flint and Saginaw, and sporadic power outages are being reported.  We haven’t lost ours and I consider us to be very lucky.  The snow began early yesterday evening, along with some rain mixed in.  Later it turned to all snow along with increasing winds.  Our Owosso airport is reporting wind gusts up to 44 mph at this time. …

Winter Storm Warning This Evening – Mid Michigan

Winter Storm Warning This Evening – Mid Michigan

Everyone is busy getting ready for the storm.  Stores are crowded with last minute shoppers and I’m glad I don’t have to go anywhere today.  Rain and snow is supposed to begin sometime this afternoon, but the warning doesn’t go into effect until 7 PM.  At this time, estimated snow amounts expected are 5-8 inches for my area.  The big issue will be the wind.  We could see gusts up to 50 mph, and sustained winds at 24-35 mph.  No…
