Unseasonable Cold Returns To Mid Michigan

Unseasonable Cold Returns To Mid Michigan

We received a few snow showers yesterday leaving us with an additional 0.03 ” of new snow.  Our ground cover is about 2.5 inches at this time and another round of snow is expected this weekend although just an inch or two.  The worse part is that another polar vortex is heading our way next week.  Meteorological spring will begin tomorrow but it will feel like anything but spring.  On the positive side, we seem to be having more sunny…

The Never Ending Winter Continues In Mid Michigan

The Never Ending Winter Continues In Mid Michigan

The picture was taken in Houghton, MI. For those who love snow, they have to be in paradise this year.  It just won’t quit!  Pictures from the U.P. are unbelievable.  I posted some on my Facebook page taken by a student at Michigan Tech up in Houghton. and  I can’t imagine how they will dig out from all of that.  My daughter lived up there 10 years ago and I’m certainly glad that she isn’t there now.  Some areas have…

Michigan Blizzard Leaves County Roads Closed, Power Outages, Wind Damage

Michigan Blizzard Leaves County Roads Closed, Power Outages, Wind Damage

Yesterday was a miserable day in Michigan as well as other states to our south.  We had wind gusts up to 60 mph in places and significant snowfall in some areas.  We only received about an inch of new snow, but Otsego county in northern lower Michigan received about 7 inches of new snow.    All the roads there are closed this morning including portions of I-75.  Surprisingly, there aren’t that many power outages which really is a surprise.  In spite…

Rain, Snow, Winds For Our Sunday – Mid Michigan

Rain, Snow, Winds For Our Sunday – Mid Michigan

The winds began to roar around 10 AM this morning and it is raising quite a bit of havoc around the state.  The Mackinaw Bridge is closed after a sheet of ice fell from one of the towers onto the windshield of a pickup truck, putting a big hole in it.  Luckily, it was on the passenger side so the driver wasn’t injured.  After that, they closed the bridge.  With these winds, I’m surprised that it was even open at…

Nasty Winter Storm Heading Our Way – Mid Michigan

Nasty Winter Storm Heading Our Way – Mid Michigan

Tomorrow should be quite interesting with this storm affecting so many states.  Although my area isn’t expecting any snow, winds will be the issue.  There is a high wind watch in effect for tomorrow morning through tomorrow night and a blizzard warning for the U.P.  Wind gusts up to 60 mph can be expected and the State Police are warning everyone that power outages are a real possibility, and they could last for a few days.  Today is my son’s…

A Sunny Fairly Warm Thursday – Mid Michigan

A Sunny Fairly Warm Thursday – Mid Michigan

Yesterday was a fairly mellow day but we had clouds all day but none of the freezing rain or snow that was predicted.  Finally, we had some light drizzle in the late afternoon but temperatures were warm enough that none of it froze.  There was 0.02″ in my gauge this morning.  Today has been sunny but there is a brisk breeze which adds to the chill.  At least it’s sunny  We could see highs reaching close to 40°F. Our 1:30…

The Start Of A Warmup And Into The Weekend – Mid Michigan

The Start Of A Warmup And Into The Weekend – Mid Michigan

Our highs today will be right around freezing and we are under a winter weather advisory, with snow, rain, and freezing rain expected.  So far, there has been nothing and it looks like most is remaining to our north.  We have to take a trip to Flint this afternoon and I’m hoping that it holds off until we get back.  Regardless, it doesn’t look like it will be too bad but we just don’t need anymore ice. Our 12:30 PM…

Another Sunny Day Before The Next Winter Mess – Mid Michigan

Another Sunny Day Before The Next Winter Mess – Mid Michigan

Yesterday was very nice although temperatures only made it into the mid 20s.  There was plenty of sun and hardly any wind.  Then a beautiful full super moon topped it off last night.  Today will be about the same with maybe a little more wind.  There is another system approaching for tomorrow with a little snow, freezing rain, then turning to all rain in the afternoon.  I’m wishing for a few of 50° weather to get rid of all the…

3 Inches Of New Snow For Mid Michigan

3 Inches Of New Snow For Mid Michigan

The snow began yesterday around 1 PM and we had whiteout conditions at times.  It is light and fluffy, so easy to shovel.  We received 3 inches of new snow and our snow cover is now about 5.2 inches.  There is still a layer of ice underneath which never got a chance to melt.  We will see temps warming up a bit as the week goes on and we could see the 40s by week’s end. Our 8:30 AM temperature…

Snow Squalls For Our Sunday – Mid Michigan

Snow Squalls For Our Sunday – Mid Michigan

Yesterday was supposed to be sunny.  It never happened.  We were supposed to have 4 days of dry weather.  That isn’t happening either.  In fact,  it’s snowing quite hard out there right now.  The latest forecast is now calling for up to 3 inches of new snow by tomorrow for my area.  How can these local weather gurus get it so wrong?  We still have about 2 inches of very icy snow cover from the last storm, but hey!  This…
