Mid Michigan Weather

After a very dry period in Michigan’s north country, massive, heavy thunderstorms moved across the state overnight dropping over an inch of rain in many areas.  Red flag warnings were issued over the past week with the fire danger very high, so this rain was very badly needed.  The storm brought very heavy rain, constant thunder and lightning, and lasted about an hour and a half.  Yesterday was very warm and temperatures didn’t cool off until the storms rolled shortly…

We drove up yesterday with sun most of the way.  After reaching the campground, we decided to head into Cheboygan to get something to eat.  Then we went to the in-law’s cabins to visit for a while.   The sun was out this entire time.  On the way back to the campground, we noticed that everything was wet.  There had been a downpour while we were gone and all of our chairs and rugs were soaked.  There wasn’t even any rain…

Although my area just got rain, Ovid, about 10 miles to our west, was hit by strong winds and damaging hail.  Hail stones the size of golf balls to almost baseball size were reported.  A friend at a yard party in Ovid even reported seeing a tornado which uprooted a tree on their property.  Small thunderstorm cells were moving from the NW to the SE as the evening progressed, and we were under weather advisories most of the evening.  We…

A large area of thunderstorms formed over mid Michigan and moved to the south late yesterday.  There were no storm warnings issued although there should have been.  Local forecasters said that they didn’t actually reach severe levels although there was plenty of wind damage done.  Here at my house, we received 0.24″ of rain and there isn’t any wind damage that I can see.  My weather station recorded 54 lightning strikes with the closest being 1 mile away.  Durand was…

We had to go to Detroit yesterday and the weather situation was quite remarkable.  When we left at 9 AM, the sun was out with scattered clouds.  Then the sky became overcast and dark clouds began appearing to our south.  We soon had sprinkles with no real heavy rain.  On our return home, we ran into one deluge after another.  It was like going through a car wash and visibility was near zero at times.  These rain squalls didn’t last…

Our weather here in Indian River today is wonderful. Skies have been clear most of the day, and temperatures have been mild depending where you are. We took a drive to Cheboygan and temperatures there were only in the 60s. Here at the camp ground, it is currently in the upper 70s.
