I have lived in Michigan all of my life and became very interested in the weather after the 1953 Flint tornado. This was one of the few EF5 tornadoes in our state's history (since records have been kept). Although we are not strangers to severe storms in Michigan, EF5 tornadoes are very rare. I live in an area where we rarely get a good thunderstorm, in fact, we haven't had one all summer. When I lived down by Detroit, they were frequent during the spring and summer months. I love experiencing the four seasons here in Michigan and I wouldn't live anywhere else.
A Very Wet, Dark Wednesday Morning In Mid Michigan

A Very Wet, Dark Wednesday Morning In Mid Michigan

We had quite a loud thunderstorm overnight that woke me up.  That usually doesn’t happen.  There was 0.41″ in my gauge this morning and it is very windy.  The next few days will be quite warm, then a strong cold front will drop the temperatures below average once again.  The upper peninsula has snow cover already and I’m sure that  makes them happy.  I’m not ready for snow yet although I’m hearing that it is a possibility soon. Our 9:45…

Mix Of Sun, Clouds And Rain – Mid Michigan

Mix Of Sun, Clouds And Rain – Mid Michigan

The past three days have seen a mix of every kind of weather.  There would be periods of sun, then clouds and a sprinkle of rain every so often.  Today is starting off with clear skies and very chilly temperatures,  but I’m already seeing clouds moving in.  The good thing is that the winds shouldn’t be too strong today, so it won’t feel so cold.  The wind is always an issue this time of year.  There will be a full…

A Mix Of Sun And Clouds For Our Saturday – Mid Michigan

A Mix Of Sun And Clouds For Our Saturday – Mid Michigan

With the winds of the past several days, many of the trees have already lost their leaves.  The maples and oaks seem to hang on the longest.  There is still a lot of color left and today won’t be nearly as blustery as Thursday and Friday.  Highs will only make it into he mid 50s however, which is about 10 degrees below where it should be for this date.  We are expecting a little warmup next week but it will…

Rain, Clouds, Wind and Sun For Mid Michigan

Rain, Clouds, Wind and Sun For Mid Michigan

Today began with a heavy frost and clear skies.  Since then, the winds have picked up, clouds have moved in with a little rain.  The picture shows a waterspout near the Mackinaw Bridge from earlier today.   Temperatures are unseasonably cold and it feels like a day in November.  Some areas of the UP have snow cover, up to an inch plus.  Most of us are not quite ready for that yet, but I don’t think that Mother Nature cares much. …

Temperatures Dropping And Cloudy Skies – Mid Michigan

Temperatures Dropping And Cloudy Skies – Mid Michigan

Temperatures have been dropping since early this morning, and skies are overcast with strong, cold winds.  It’s not going to be a pleasant day weather-wise, but we have to expect it this time of year.  Radar this morning showed showers passing over but I saw no trace of even a sprinkle.  Maybe the air was too dry for it to reach the ground.  It’s starting to look and feel like November. Our 11 AM temp is 52F (11C), the humidity…

A Transitional Period For Mid Michigan

A Transitional Period For Mid Michigan

After a week of warmer than normal temperatures, there is a strong cold front heading our way which will cool us down quite a bit by Thursday.  What’s worse are the winds that are coming with it.  We could see gusts near 40 mph tonight, and that will probably destroy a lot of the color that we have.  I was hoping that Halloween would be nice this year but that’s starting to be questionable.  This morning began with light fog…

Fine Weather Continues In Mid Michigan

Fine Weather Continues In Mid Michigan

Today is yet another with plenty of sun and fairly mild temperatures.  Yesterday’s high was in the low 70s and today won’t be quite as warm but nice anyway.  Although we are having brisk winds, it’s still enjoyable.  Our colors this year are fabulous.  They haven’t been this nice in the past three years.  I’m thinking it’s because we haven’t gotten much rain.  Whatever the reason, we are certainly enjoying it. Our 11:30 AM temp is 56F (13C), the humidity…

Probably The Last Of Our Summer-Like Weather – Mid Michigan

Probably The Last Of Our Summer-Like Weather – Mid Michigan

We started our day with clear skies but now clouds have taken over.  Temperatures should still make it into the low 70s today, but the strong winds will make it seem much cooler.  We will only have this weekend with warm temps, then more seasonable autumn temperatures will be the rule.  We knew it couldn’t last forever. Our 10:30 AM temp is 69F (21C), the humidity is 81%, and the dew point is 64F (18C).  Skies are mostly cloudy and…

A Sunny Very Warm Day Expected – Mid Michigan

A Sunny Very Warm Day Expected – Mid Michigan

This may be the last of our very warm weather, with temps expected in the 60s and 70s the remainder of this week.  Today should reach the mid 70s.  We’ll enjoy it while it lasts.  There isn’t even any rain in the forecast to disrupt the changing colors on the trees.  We aren’t quite at peak yet but probably early next week.  Regardless, it it very colorful out there, and with the sun, it’s absolutely beautiful. Our 10:45 AM temperature…

Beautiful Weather Continues In Mid Michigan

Beautiful Weather Continues In Mid Michigan

We did receive a little rain this morning but not much more than a few sprinkles.  Now skies have cleared and winds have picked up.  Highs today should reach the upper 60s and it should be a very nice day.  We continue to see more color everyday and I’m hoping that the strong winds don’t wreck it too soon. Our 10:15 AM temperature is 63F (17F), the humidity is 63%, and skies are clear.  Winds are from the west at…
