Mid Michigan Weather

As if this cold spell isn’t bad enough, Consumers Power sent out an alert last night asking their customers to dial down their thermostats to 65° or lower.  There was a fire at one of their gas compressor stations and a shortage of natural gas was very possible.  Wouldn’t you know that this would happen in record cold weather.  Thankfully, we have propane and aren’t affected. While I was out measuring snow this morning for my CoCoRahs report, the reality of just how cold it is really set in.  At that time my thermometer read -8°F and I’m not sure what the wind chill was.  The wind felt like ice when it hit me in the face and I was very happy to get back indoors again.   I shoveled out a path for my dogs last night but it was covered this morning.  Their little feet…

Our Governor has issued a state of emergency for the state because of the dangerous wind chills and temperatures for tomorrow.  I really don’t know what that will entail,  but at any rate, no one should be out tomorrow that doesn’t have to be.  I have heard that wind chills could be as low as -40°F with highs only around zero.   More snow is in our forecast for today with NOAA saying another 3 inches possible for tonight.  I think…

So far, we have a very fine but relatively heavy snow falling at this time.  It’s almost like powder.  With the winds and low temperatures, it is not a good day to be out and about.  Everything is closed including most city and county offices.  How much snow that we are expecting varies according to who you listen to, but the general consensus seems to be anywhere from 7 to 9 inches for my area.  Counties just to our north…

My son, who lives in the Detroit area, reported very icy, slippery conditions when he had to leave for work early this morning.  I’m not sure what it was like here because my deck was only wet and the snow was very slushy when I got up at 8 AM.  I know that we had freezing drizzle for a while but I’m not sure how long it lasted.  Today will be the only relief we get from the frigid weather. …

It was  -14°F when I got up this morning on my thermometer.  Lansing was reporting  -18 as were some other cities.  This is the coldest morning that I can remember in quite a while.  My son had to have surgery on his eye, and when we got to the hospital, the entire front was flooded because of a broken water pipe.  The lobby, patient registration, and the lab were all closed because of water.  Part of the ceiling in registration…
