Dangerous Cold Continues, Natural Gas Alert – Mid Michigan

Dangerous Cold Continues, Natural Gas Alert – Mid Michigan

As if this cold spell isn’t bad enough, Consumers Power sent out an alert last night asking their customers to dial down their thermostats to 65° or lower.  There was a fire at one of their gas compressor stations and a shortage of natural gas was very possible.  Wouldn’t you know that this would happen in record cold weather.  Thankfully, we have propane and aren’t affected. Yesterday was sunny and a very pretty day if you were just looking out…

Wind Chill Warning Until 11 AM – Mid Michigan

Wind Chill Warning Until 11 AM – Mid Michigan

While I was out measuring snow this morning for my CoCoRahs report, the reality of just how cold it is really set in.  At that time my thermometer read -8°F and I’m not sure what the wind chill was.  The wind felt like ice when it hit me in the face and I was very happy to get back indoors again.   I shoveled out a path for my dogs last night but it was covered this morning.  Their little feet…

Dangerous Wind Chill Replaces Winter Storm – Mid Michigan

Dangerous Wind Chill Replaces Winter Storm – Mid Michigan

Our Governor has issued a state of emergency for the state because of the dangerous wind chills and temperatures for tomorrow.  I really don’t know what that will entail,  but at any rate, no one should be out tomorrow that doesn’t have to be.  I have heard that wind chills could be as low as -40°F with highs only around zero.   More snow is in our forecast for today with NOAA saying another 3 inches possible for tonight.  I think…

A Major Winter Storm In Progress – Mid Michigan

A Major Winter Storm In Progress – Mid Michigan

So far, we have a very fine but relatively heavy snow falling at this time.  It’s almost like powder.  With the winds and low temperatures, it is not a good day to be out and about.  Everything is closed including most city and county offices.  How much snow that we are expecting varies according to who you listen to, but the general consensus seems to be anywhere from 7 to 9 inches for my area.  Counties just to our north…

Winter Storm Warning In Effect For Northern Lower Michigan

Winter Storm Warning In Effect For Northern Lower Michigan

This doesn’t really come as a surprise since they gave us a heads up since last week.  Until now, we have been lucky with the previous storms staying to our south, but now it’s our turn.  NOAA is saying 6-9 inches possible for my area.  On the positive side, the temps will be cold enough so that any snow should be light and fluffy, easy to shovel.  On the negative side, strong winds will accompany it so blowing and drifting…

Severe Winter Weather Next Week For Mid Michigan

Severe Winter Weather Next Week For Mid Michigan

We are already being warned about what’s ahead for us next week.   In fact, Wednesday may not even see highs much above zero,.  In addition to that, there will be strong winds making for a very dangerous wind chill and we could see snowfall of at least 6 inches on Monday.  I really don’t mind winter except for this kind of weather, and what’s worse is that there doesn’t seem to be much relief until early February. Our 9:15 AM…

A Blustery, Very Cold Day In Mid Michigan

A Blustery, Very Cold Day In Mid Michigan

I had to go out early this morning and to say that it is bitter cold is an understatement.  Highs today will only reach the teens and this will continue into next week.  In fact, there is no real warmup expected until at least early February.  We had some light snow showers this morning, mainly lake effect.  The sun came out between them and there are some breaks in the cloud cover right now.  Radar is showing lake effect snow…

A Spring-Like Wednesday Before Another Bout Of Winter – Mid Michigan

A Spring-Like Wednesday Before Another Bout Of Winter – Mid Michigan

Yesterday felt like a spring day with rain most of the day.  It began as freezing rain which didn’t last long, then rain and warm temperatures melted  whatever snow and ice that we had.  We can expect another round of light snow with very little accumulation today and tonight,.  More of an issue will be the temperatures.  Highs will only reach the teens and lows below zero to single digits for the remainder of January Our 9:30 AM temperature is…

Wet, Icy, Miserable Morning In Mid Michigan

Wet, Icy, Miserable Morning In Mid Michigan

My son, who lives in the Detroit area, reported very icy, slippery conditions when he had to leave for work early this morning.  I’m not sure what it was like here because my deck was only wet and the snow was very slushy when I got up at 8 AM.  I know that we had freezing drizzle for a while but I’m not sure how long it lasted.  Today will be the only relief we get from the frigid weather. …

BRRRRRR! For Mid Michigan, That’s All I Can Say.

BRRRRRR! For Mid Michigan, That’s All I Can Say.

It was  -14°F when I got up this morning on my thermometer.  Lansing was reporting  -18 as were some other cities.  This is the coldest morning that I can remember in quite a while.  My son had to have surgery on his eye, and when we got to the hospital, the entire front was flooded because of a broken water pipe.  The lobby, patient registration, and the lab were all closed because of water.  Part of the ceiling in registration…
