A Quiet, Calm New Year’s Eve For Mid Michigan

A Quiet, Calm New Year’s Eve For Mid Michigan

Our New Year’s Eve day will be calm but very frigid.  The high is expected to only reach the single digits.  I hope that everyone stays safe through the weekend as there will be a lot of drinking going on, and they all won’t have designated drivers.  Yesterday brought some excitement to the Traverse City area.  A cold air funnel was spotted over the bay and most had no idea what it was.  They couldn’t believe that there would be…

More Snow For Mid Michigan

More Snow For Mid Michigan

There seems to be no end to these snow showers.  Every day we pick up another 1/2 inch or so, just enough to keep roads icy.  Most is lake effect.  We currently have  about 4 inches of snow cover.  Our temperatures remain very cold and this is expected to continue until well into January.  With the early sunsets that we have this time of year, the snow does brighten it up considerably.  With these extreme temp fluctuations that have been…

A Little Snow and Slightly Warmer Temps For Mid Michigan

A Little Snow and Slightly Warmer Temps For Mid Michigan

We had light snow most of Thursday and we gained another half inch of snow cover.  We now have about three inches.  This morning actually felt warm with no wind and the overnight low didn’t fall below zero for a change.  Unfortunately, it isn’t going to last.  Highs will remain in the teens and a high only in the single digits expected on Sunday.  Extended forecasts are telling us that this will possibly continue into mid January.  On the positive…

No End in Sight For This Arctic Air Mass – Mid Michigan

No End in Sight For This Arctic Air Mass – Mid Michigan

This bitterly cold weather is getting old.  I can’t remember when it has been this cold for such an extended period of time, and there is no end in sight.  The snow doesn’t bother me that much, but I hate this extreme cold weather.  Skies were clear and everything was covered with frost this morning in addition to the snow.  It looked pretty but sure didn’t feel that way.  It was -7° when I got up and has warmed up…

Severe Cold and Wind Chill Advisory for Mid Michigan

Severe Cold and Wind Chill Advisory for Mid Michigan

We haven’t had weather this cold in several years.  In fact, the past two have been quite mild.  We had sun most of yesterday but it certainly didn’t feel any warmer.  Highs barely made it out of the single digits and today won’t be much better.  What’s worse is that there is no relief in sight from this frigid air, at least not in the upcoming week.  We have about three inches of snow cover at this time and needless…

Bitter Cold / Lots of Snow For Michigan

Bitter Cold / Lots of Snow For Michigan

We had snow most of Sunday and even Christmas Day.  Between the two days, we have about 4 inches of snow cover.  Today is sunny but it does nothing to make going outdoors more bearable.  It was -6°F when I got up this morning and the expected high was on 8°F.  My thermometer is reading a bit higher than that now, and it doesn’t appear to be in the sun.  Regardless, it is bitter cold out there and we don’t…

Merry Christmas From Mid Michigan

Merry Christmas From Mid Michigan

We got our white Christmas after all.  It snowed almost all day yesterday, and I think most of the night.  We had a little over two inches early this morning, and we have received about another inch or two since then.  Driving to church this morning was slow going.  Now we are seeing some breaks in the clouds and radar is showing that we are in the clear for a while at least.  There were even a few peeks of…

A Peaceful Christmas Eve in Mid Michigan

A Peaceful Christmas Eve in Mid Michigan

Our Christmas Eve day is starting out with very cold temps and a little snow.  We haven’t received  any accumulations yet, but we could get up to three inches by tomorrow.  So at this time, it looks like we could get our white Christmas after all.  It has just now started snowing and radar is showing that it won’t stop anytime soon.  Our temperatures, however, will only make it in the  low to mid 20s. Our 1:30 AM temperatuer is…

More Frigid Air Coming To Mid Michigan

More Frigid Air Coming To Mid Michigan

We continue to have an average of an inch of snow cover in the areas where snow remains.  About half of the ground is bare however.  There is still the chance that we could get more tomorrow or Christmas day, but just a chance.  Regardless, there is another polar vortex heading our way and highs will only reach the teens in a few days.  The pendulum effect seems to continue as the year reaches it’s end.  I have heard various…

We have just a light covering of snow this morning.  Most of the old snow has melted away.  All that remains is where the snow banks were and shaded areas.  There is the chance of freezing drizzle early today but we have nothing happening at this time.  Northern Michigan is getting quite a bit as most of this system will remain to our north.  Not much precip is expected in our area today.  Yesterday was the official first day of…
