I have lived in Michigan all of my life and became very interested in the weather after the 1953 Flint tornado. This was one of the few EF5 tornadoes in our state's history (since records have been kept). Although we are not strangers to severe storms in Michigan, EF5 tornadoes are very rare. I live in an area where we rarely get a good thunderstorm, in fact, we haven't had one all summer. When I lived down by Detroit, they were frequent during the spring and summer months. I love experiencing the four seasons here in Michigan and I wouldn't live anywhere else.
Booming, Thunder-Like Sounds In Mid Michigan

Booming, Thunder-Like Sounds In Mid Michigan

Last night, we kept hearing noises that sounded like thunder, but there were no storms appearing near us on radar.  Others  had reported hearing these also.   I did see a few flashes of lightning way off i the distance but not close enough to hear thunder.  The sheriff’s dept reported that someone was shooting fireworks off about 10 miles from us, but I know what fireworks sound like, and this noise wasn’t that.  The last time I heard it was…

More Extreme Heat For Mid Michigan

More Extreme Heat For Mid Michigan

Once again, our temps will reach the upper 80s with thunderstorms in the mix.  The weather service is showing us in a slight risk area for severe weather.  Hopefully, that won’t happen.  This weekend is my husband’s birthday and the kids will all be here.  I was hoping to have a campfire tonight.  The greatest risk is just to our north so hopefully, all the rain will miss us. Our 10 AM temperature is 78°F (26°C), the humidity is 60%…

Calm, Seasonal Weather In Our Forecast – Mid Michigan

Calm, Seasonal Weather In Our Forecast – Mid Michigan

Summer weather came to Michigan with a “bang” this year.  We went from a chilly, April-May type weather to very hot as of July 1.  For awhile, we were wondering if summer was ever going to get here.  At least we aren’t sweltering like folks in Europe are.  My garden got off to a late start with the cold weather, but everything now seems to have recovered quite well.  Today should be nice with just a very slight chance of…

Nice Summer Weather For Mid Michigan

Nice Summer Weather For Mid Michigan

The past two days were wonderful with plenty of sun and cool temperatures.  It was nice to have the windows open for a change.  But today will bring the heat back.  Highs are expected to reach the mid 80s.  We have received a little rain over the past few days and there are slight chances for rain every day this week. Our 9:15 AM temp is 66°F (19°C), the humidity is 69% and the dew point is 55°F.  Winds are…

Much Cooler Weather For Michigan

Much Cooler Weather For Michigan

It’s a joy to be outdoors today with cool temps, low humidity and a comfortable dew point.  We finally got our power back yesterday evening and it felt so good to turn the AC back on.  Our generator does pretty well but isn’t big enough to run the AC, the electric stove, or the water heater.  Although the temperatures weren’t too bad yesterday, the humidity and dew points were still high making it quite uncomfortable. Right now, (2:30 PM), our…

Severe Storms Across Michigan Left Many Without Power This Morning Including Us

Severe Storms Across Michigan Left Many Without Power This Morning Including Us

We haven’t had power now since about 5:30 yesterday afternoon.  We thought that it might be a quick fix until we looked at the power outage map.  It is quite extensive.  The storm that we got was more wind than anything else and only left 0.08″ in my rain gauge.  Other areas of the state got much worse.  There is a lot of damage, especially on the west side of the state and some areas to our north.  Mother Nature,…

Excessive Heat, Severe Storms In The Mix For Michigan

Excessive Heat, Severe Storms In The Mix For Michigan

Severe storms started popping up in the afternoon yesterday, affecting mostly the western side of the state.  We didn’t get any here, just a little rain and distant rolling thunder coming at us from all directions.  There were many comments last night on Facebook about the thunder.  Storm warnings went up in many areas throughout the afternoon and luckily, my area was spared.  We did get one very strong gust of wind about 3:30 AM this morning which woke me…

We Michiganders Aren’t Used To This

We Michiganders Aren’t Used To This

I’d move to Florida if I wanted to deal with this kind of weather. It is very hot, humid, and just miserable out there this morning.  We are under a excessive heat warning until tomorrow night and it can’t come fast enough for me.  I couldn’t believe it when I opened the door this morning.  It was like sticking my head in an oven.  I dialed my AC up to a higher temp since there was such a difference in…

A Excessive Heat Warning Is In Effect For Michigan

A Excessive Heat Warning Is In Effect For Michigan

Today will not be the ideal day to be outdoors doing anything.  The heat index is expected to be well over 100° and that’s in the shade.  I’m seeing some storms moving in off Lake Michigan toward us but future radar images are showing that they will fall apart before reaching us.  The National Weather Service says that temperatures will climb in the upper 80s today, and into the mid to upper 90s on Friday and Saturday.  Oh please God,…

Very Uncomfortable Weather In Mid Michigan

Very Uncomfortable Weather In Mid Michigan

Today is a bit cooler than it has been, but with the high dew point and humidity, it feel like a sauna outdoors.  I thank the good Lord that I have AC.  This morning is cloudy as was yesterday.  We had a few short-lived showers which left 0.03″ of rain in my gauge.  The chance for more rain continues today although the radar is clear except for a few little pockets of rain down by Detroit. Our 10 AM temperature…
