I have lived in Michigan all of my life and became very interested in the weather after the 1953 Flint tornado. This was one of the few EF5 tornadoes in our state's history (since records have been kept). Although we are not strangers to severe storms in Michigan, EF5 tornadoes are very rare. I live in an area where we rarely get a good thunderstorm, in fact, we haven't had one all summer. When I lived down by Detroit, they were frequent during the spring and summer months. I love experiencing the four seasons here in Michigan and I wouldn't live anywhere else.
Another Hot One For Mid Michigan

Another Hot One For Mid Michigan

Yesterday’s heat broke many records and ushered in severe weather in our upper peninsula.  It wasn’t anything though compared to what Wisconsin had.  Tornadoes and severe thunderstorms moved across Wisconsin most of the afternoon, but lost much of it’s strength when crossing Lake Michigan.  The western portions of the state saw strong storms which did cause some damage and power outages.  Here in mid Michigan, we just had some light rain and a little thunder and lightning.  There was only…

Severe Weather To Our Northwest – Mid Michigan

Severe Weather To Our Northwest – Mid Michigan

Record heat is affecting us today with highs expected in the mid 90s.  Thunderstorms are beginning to develop over western Wisconsin and are expected to move into northern Michigan later.  Tornadoes are also a possibility.  Our weather here is expected to remain calm but like an oven.  A local meteorologist was warning anyone doing any camping up north to keep their eyes to the sky today.  I’m just happy that we aren’t there.  I hate severe weather while staying in…

No Severe Weather For Us – Mid Michigan

No Severe Weather For Us – Mid Michigan

We have to admit that those storms last night looked pretty impressive crossing Lake Michigan, but they decided to swing to the south after landing on our western shore.  The southwest and southern-most counties got the worst of it, but I don’t think there was much actual severe weather.  As far as rain goes, we only got 0.14″ here where I live, but we did get a great lightning show from it.  I also noticed that the storms were diminishing…

Thunderstorms In Our Forecast – Mid Michigan

Thunderstorms In Our Forecast – Mid Michigan

If you look out right now, storms would seem like the most unlikely thing to happen.  The humidity is low and there are no clouds to be seen.  But I’ve already received several weather statements that we could get some heavy thunderstorms, some even severe, late this afternoon and overnight.  Temps today should reach the low 80s with 90s expected for the rest of the week.  Usually we get severe weather with an approaching cold front, but not this time. …

A Nice Summer Weekend For Mid Michigan

A Nice Summer Weekend For Mid Michigan

This has been a very nice weekend, with comfortable temperatures, and just enough of a breeze to open the windows are air out the house.  There were some showers popping up on radar yesterday, but my area seemed to remain dry.  There were a few drops in my rain gauge this morning so I think we may had had a sprinkle overnight.  Today has been sunny with just a few passing clouds and there is no rain expected.  Highs will…

Another Cloudy Day In Mid Michigan

Another Cloudy Day In Mid Michigan

We had a heavy, brief shower yesterday afternoon, which dropped almost half an inch in about 20 minutes.  Today there are more showing up on radar but I don’t think they’ll reach us.  The grass is growing about an inch a day with all this rain, and whenever they predict a dry period for us, it rains anyway.  With gas prices what they are, it’s costing a small fortune just keeping up with the lawn.  We are expecting a hot…

Rain On The Way For Mid Michigan

Rain On The Way For Mid Michigan

We have had a few sprinkles so far today, but heavier rain is moving in from the southwest.  It has been on the radar since this morning and doesn’t seem to to moving very fast.  But local forecasters are assuring us that it is coming.  Highs today won’t even reach the 70s, but the 80s will be returning next week.  It looks like this will be a fairly wet weekend coming up before our next round of sunny weather. Our…

Rain Ending, Sun Appearing – Mid Michigan

Rain Ending, Sun Appearing – Mid Michigan

After an afternoon of sprinkles, we finally got a good rainfall overnight.  There was 0.42″ in my gauge this morning, and many areas of the state received more than an inch.  The eastern lower part of the state was under a flood warning but haven’t heard of the extent of any flooding.  Radar is showing some light rain moving across the mid sections of the state, but most of it has moved well off to our east.  The sun has…

Cloudy With A Threat Of Rain – Mid Michigan

Cloudy With A Threat Of Rain – Mid Michigan

Rain is in our forecast for today, and radar is showing it slowly approaching us.  At this time, however, it appears to be light with no significant storms developing.  Thunderstorms are supposed to develop this afternoon but that remains to be seen.  I was hoping that we’d get some rain since I haven’t watered my garden in a few days, and it is getting pretty dry.  The northern portions of the state seem to be getting a good drenching, if…

A Cloudy, Rainy Day In Mid Michigan

A Cloudy, Rainy Day In Mid Michigan

This morning began with a few sprinkles, and the radar is showing rain over us, but nothing is happening right now.  We are expecting intermittent showers throughout the day and temperatures will remain below average.  The leaves all seem to be out full now and everything is lush green.  This is expected to be a cool June and so far, that is what’s happening.  With all the stormy weather that has been happening in other states, the weather here in…
