After a very dry period in Michigan’s north country, massive, heavy thunderstorms moved across the state overnight dropping over an inch of rain in many areas. Red flag warnings were issued over the past week with the fire danger very high, so this rain was very badly needed. We drove up yesterday with sun most of the way. After reaching the campground, we decided to head into Cheboygan to get something to eat. Then we went to the in-law’s cabins to visit for a while. Although my area just got rain, Ovid, about 10 miles to our west, was hit by strong winds and damaging hail. Hail stones the size of golf balls to almost baseball size were reported. A friend at a yard party in Ovid even reported seeing a tornado which uprooted a tree on their property. A large area of thunderstorms formed over mid Michigan and moved to the south late yesterday. There were no storm warnings issued although there should have been. Local forecasters said that they didn’t actually reach severe levels although there was plenty of wind damage done. We had to go to Detroit yesterday and the weather situation was quite remarkable. When we left at 9 AM, the sun was out with scattered clouds. Then the sky became overcast and dark clouds began appearing to our south. We soon had sprinkles with no real heavy rain. On our return home, we ran into one deluge after another. Today is another scorcher with my weather station reading over 90F.
