I have lived in Michigan all of my life and became very interested in the weather after the 1953 Flint tornado. This was one of the few EF5 tornadoes in our state's history (since records have been kept). Although we are not strangers to severe storms in Michigan, EF5 tornadoes are very rare. I live in an area where we rarely get a good thunderstorm, in fact, we haven't had one all summer. When I lived down by Detroit, they were frequent during the spring and summer months. I love experiencing the four seasons here in Michigan and I wouldn't live anywhere else.
A Bit Warmer In Mid Michigan

A Bit Warmer In Mid Michigan

I got out this morning and measured our actual snow pack and it is now 7.3 inches.  That’s down 3.2 inches from right after the storm last Wednesday.  I don’t think that there was much melting but more settling than anything.  I noticed some thawing yesterday but not much.  We did briefly get over the freezing mark earlier but it didn’t last long. We should see much warmer temps over the next three days before the next Alberta clipper arrives…

Warmer With Filtered Sun – Mid Michigan

Warmer With Filtered Sun – Mid Michigan

It actually feels balmy out there today.  Even the wind doesn’t seem that cold.  I’m hoping that these Alberta clippers are finished for the year but I’m probably asking too much.  We have mostly clouds but I’m seeing a little sun trying to make an appearance.  I’m noticing that the temperature is rising quite quickly and my weather station is now reading 33°F (1°C) at 2:00 pm. This week is expected to be considerably warmer than the past two, so…

Another Sunny Day, But Bitter Cold – Mid Michigan

Another Sunny Day, But Bitter Cold – Mid Michigan

Clearing snow, even with a snowblower, is a lot of work when you have this much snow.  We have clear skies today, but with temps in the teens, it doesn’t do much to warm it up.  My husband finally got the snow removal finished and everything is back to normal.  There are a few warm days coming up next week where highs should rise above freezing.  I don’t think it will be warm enough to rid us of much snow,…

Sunny But Very Cold Following The Storm – Mid Michigan

Sunny But Very Cold Following The Storm – Mid Michigan

Yesterday was quite calm and not a bit stormy as originally predicted.  There were a few flurries early in the day and the wind increased a little causing some drifting.  We received about 11 inches here, but today, with the snow settling, I measured 9.5 inches of snow cover.  The snow plow came through early today, so life has returned to normal once again.  Looking at the radar, the storm is now well to our south, and I feel sorry…

Winter Storm Arrived On Schedule – Mid Michigan

Winter Storm Arrived On Schedule – Mid Michigan

The rain began late yesterday afternoon and continued into the overnight.  I’m not sure when it changed over to snow but there was 3.5 inches already on my deck when I got up shortly after 8AM.    A steady, moderate snow has continue since then and I think that we have another inch or two in accumulation since then.  This is expected to continue until sometime tomorrow morning.  We did our shopping yesterday so our grocery situation is in good shape. …

Winter Storm Watch For Mid Michigan

Winter Storm Watch For Mid Michigan

All counties west of us have been upgraded to a winter storm warning, so we know for certain that it’s coming.  The big question is how much snow we can expect.  We seem to be right on the line between the 6-8 inch area, and the 12-14 inch area.  Recent forecasts seem to be leaning toward the latter.  Regardless, it’s a fact that we are in for a lot of snow  We are waiting for the latest computer models information…

Sunny And A Little Warmer In Mid Michigan

Sunny And A Little Warmer In Mid Michigan

Our temperatures are a bit warmer today, and with the sun, it seems even warmer.  We are looking forward to what maybe a major storm on Wednesday and Thursday, but no real estimates yet on how extensive it will be.  I’ve heard anywhere from 25+ inches of snow to as little as 4-5.  Of course, everyone likes to hype it up, especially some of the weather duds on YouTube.  I’m not taking it seriously until what they’re telling us on…

Snow And A Little Warmer – Mid Michigan

Snow And A Little Warmer – Mid Michigan

Temperatures are a little warmer today but winds are still very chilly.  It just started snowing lightly a few minutes ago but radar isn’t showing anything significant heading our way.  It is almost the end of January and we have had no January thaw this year.  I guess Mother Nature figured that our mild November and December was good enough.  There are a couple of days ahead where highs are expected to reach the upper 30s to near 40°F.  Unfortunately…

Sunny But Very Cold In Mid Michigan

Sunny But Very Cold In Mid Michigan

Highs today won’t even make it out of the teens, but just having clear skies and sunshine eases the pain a little.  After receiving another 2-3 inches of snow cover on Monday, my son got the deck all shoveled off but it isn’t quite warm enough, even in the sun, for the residual to melt.  Tomorrow is expected to be a bit warmer, so it may happen then. Our 2 PM temperature is 18°F (8°C), the humidity is 60% under…

A Snowy Monday In Mid Michigan

A Snowy Monday In Mid Michigan

It has been snowing steadily since I got up this morning and I’m estimating that we have about two inches so far.  Our winter weather advisory goes until 7 PM and I think we will get another inch or so before it is finished.  State Police are reporting road closures on the expressways due to accidents and I’m glad that I don’t have to be out there driving in it.  If folks would just slow down. Our 4 PM temperature…
