I have lived in Michigan all of my life and became very interested in the weather after the 1953 Flint tornado. This was one of the few EF5 tornadoes in our state's history (since records have been kept). Although we are not strangers to severe storms in Michigan, EF5 tornadoes are very rare. I live in an area where we rarely get a good thunderstorm, in fact, we haven't had one all summer. When I lived down by Detroit, they were frequent during the spring and summer months. I love experiencing the four seasons here in Michigan and I wouldn't live anywhere else.
Bitter Cold Weather . . . .

Bitter Cold Weather . . . .

Today is the coldest that we’ve had this year, and there is no relief coming anytime soon.  We could see temps falling below zero for the first time in two years.  Our winter weather advisory has been changed to a wind chill advisory through tomorrow.  The sun is shining through a thin cloud layer but doing nothing to warm it up.  The roads are a mess and law enforcement is advising everyone who doesn’t have to be out, to stay…

Snow And Wind Today . . . .

Snow And Wind Today . . . .

This winter storm has been a bit of a bust for us.  We only got a couple inches of snow compared to other areas.  There is a crust of ice on top of the snow, so it was difficult to measure this morning.  The winter storm advisory ends at 1 PM so I think that most of it is over.  Winds are supposed to pick up with gusts as high as 40 mph, but hasn’t happened so far.  Yesterday afternoon,…

Winter Storm On The Way . . . . . .

Winter Storm On The Way . . . . . .

We are under a winter weather advisory rather than a warning, so it appears that we may not be affected as badly as originally thought.  That’s fine with me.  It sounds like the biggest issue will be the strong winds.  Gusts as high as 40 mph are possible and that could cause blizzard conditions.  Driving will be challenging no matter how much snow we get.  To make things worse, high temps early next week will be doing well to reach…

Winter Storm Watch Starting Tomorrow . . .

Winter Storm Watch Starting Tomorrow . . .

We woke this morning to about 1.5″ of new snow, so now there is almost 3″ on the ground.  It was heavy and wet, so it stuck to everything.  It is just warm enough that some has melted and my boys were out cleaning off the deck in preparation for “the big one”.  At this time, I’m not seeing anything on radar that looks particularly menacing, but it could all change by tomorrow.  The worst is supposed to happen late…

Sloppy, Wet Day . . . . .

Sloppy, Wet Day . . . . .

Yesterday was fairly mild with drizzle, then it changed to snow later, and became a moderate snow shower by midnight.  Everything was covered with heavy, wet snow this morning, which is sticking to all the bushes and trees.  It is also quite windy, so not a comfortable day to be out and about.  I’m glad that we cancelled our trip to Detroit today since I’m hearing that the roads were pretty bad.  Our snow cover is about 1.5″ and there…

Cold And Snowy . . . .

Cold And Snowy . . . .

Today is finally acting like January.  We seem to be right on the line between rain and snow, and snow has been gently falling all morning.  There is just a light covering on the grass and that will probably be gone by this afternoon.  It’s supposed to get quite windy later, but winds have been pretty quiet so far.  Also the temperature is expected to rise near 40°F, and the precip should be all rain.  There is no sign of…

Winter Storm? Maybe . . . . .

Winter Storm? Maybe . . . . .

We have some possible nasty weather heading our way although there are no watches or warnings for our area at this time.  It appears that most of it will come as rain with heavy snow to our north.  Regardless, I don’t plan on going anywhere until it has passed. Our 11:15 AM temperature is 33°F, the humidity is 84%, and skies are overcast.  Winds are from the south at 3-7 mph.  The pressure is 30.21 in and rising, and the…

Light Snow For Our Sunday . . . .

Light Snow For Our Sunday . . . .

Snow began falling late yesterday afternoon and continued overnight.  There is about half an inch on the ground which melted down to 0.02″ in my rain gauge.  I don’t expect it to last long since highs today should reach the mid 30s.  A winter storm is still pending for our area on Tuesday and Wednesday, but it’s total impact on us still remains to be seen. Our 11:45 AM temperature is 33°F (1°C), the humidity is 95%, and skies are…

Cold And Stormy Heading Our Way . . . .

Cold And Stormy Heading Our Way . . . .

According to YouTube weather guru, Ryan Hall, we have a number of potential snowstorms heading our way by the end of January.  So far, our winter has been snowless.  If fact, the most snow that we’ve had so far was on Halloween.  The forecast is calling for snow showers most of this week, but I’m not seeing any potential snow amounts mentioned.  I guess I’ll cancel our trip to Detroit on Wednesday and postpone it until this spring.  The upcoming…

Very Chilly . . . . .

Very Chilly . . . . .

We have yet another very cold day ahead with highs expected to not rise much above freezing.  No real precipitation is expected until next week, and I’m hoping that it comes as rain, not snow.  So far, the weather forecasts are inconclusive. Our 11:15 AM temperature is 32°F (0°C), the humidity is 78%, and skies are overcast.  Winds are from the south at 3-9 mph, and the wind chill is 24F (-4C).  The dew point is 24°F (-4°C) and the…
