I have lived in Michigan all of my life and became very interested in the weather after the 1953 Flint tornado. This was one of the few EF5 tornadoes in our state's history (since records have been kept). Although we are not strangers to severe storms in Michigan, EF5 tornadoes are very rare. I live in an area where we rarely get a good thunderstorm, in fact, we haven't had one all summer. When I lived down by Detroit, they were frequent during the spring and summer months. I love experiencing the four seasons here in Michigan and I wouldn't live anywhere else.
Much Cooler Temperature For Mid Michigan

Much Cooler Temperature For Mid Michigan

Tuesday was mostly cloudy with scattered rain showers.  We only got 0.08″ and the showers were wide spread and brief.  The biggest factor yesterday was the temperatures.  We didn’t even make it to 70° which is unusual for August in Michigan.  It should be quite a bit warmer today and highs will be back in the mid 80s by the weekend.  We were graced with this beautiful rainbow late in the day after the last shower.  That’s always a joy…

More Rain For Mid Michigan

More Rain For Mid Michigan

This has been a very wet few days for us.  We received about an inch and a half over the last 24 hours and that isn’t including what we got on Saturday night.  There is certainly no shortage of water for my area even though some areas of the state are claiming near drought conditions.  Today will be much cooler with highs only in the low 70s.  I love it. Our 10:15 AM temp is 61°F (16°C), the humidity is…

A Very Wet Sunday Morning For Mid Michigan

A Very Wet Sunday Morning For Mid Michigan

The rain began late last night and has continued since then.  There was 0.87″ at 8 AM in my gauge, and since then, we have received an additional 0.35″.  We may hit 2 inches yet by the time it’s done.  Radar is showing the end approaching us and I hope it happens soon.  My dog has refused to go out for her morning “business”, so she’s past due.  A flash flood watch remains in effect until 2 PM. Our 10:30…

Our Week In Northern Michigan Was Great, Weather-Wise

Our Week In Northern Michigan Was Great, Weather-Wise

I haven’t posted a blog for over a week because I have had no WiFi available.  The campground internet was hit by lightning in the storm 2 weeks ago, and it hasn’t been repaired yet.  I hope this doesn’t last the rest of the summer. Regardless, our weather over the past week was wonderful.  Last weekend was hot, but the last three days there were perfect.  If seemed good to turn the AC off and open the windows.  Our campground…

Heading Back Up To the North Country of Michigan

Heading Back Up To the North Country of Michigan

We will be going back to our campground today and the weather sounds good for traveling.  There is no rain in the forecast and temperatures will be comfortable.  Unfortunately, there are more 90s coming for the weekend with the chance of showers and thunderstorms, but only hit and miss at that.  It should be a good week.  I don’t know if you’ll be hearing from me because the WiFi up there is also hit and miss.  I’ll try though. Our…

A Mix Of Clouds And Sun For our Wednesday – Mid Michigan

A Mix Of Clouds And Sun For our Wednesday – Mid Michigan

There are numerous showers popping up on radar but they all seem to  be missing us.  I expected to hear the rumble of thunder overnight but no such luck.  Everything was dry this morning.  We’ll be heading up to the campground tomorrow and I’m hoping that nothing got blown away with the storms of last weekend.  This coming weekend should be more quiet although with another round of uncomfortably hot weather. Our 1:45 PM temperature is 81°F (27°C), the humidity…

A Brief Cooling Period For Mid Michigan

A Brief Cooling Period For Mid Michigan

Yesterday was quite comfortable, and today will be also .  But there is more hot weather knocking on the door and that is expected by the weekend.  We’ll be heading up to our campground on Thursday, just in time for it.  I’m hoping that it won’t be quite as hot up there but that hasn’t been the case lately.  What will be will be. Our 9:45 AM temp is 67°F (19°C), the humidity is 72%, and skies are cloudy.  Winds…

A Pleasant Monday After a Stormy Sunday – Mid Michigan

A Pleasant Monday After a Stormy Sunday – Mid Michigan

Severe thunderstorms rocked northern Michigan early yesterday causing damage to a school in Cheboygan, and many trees down across the northern areas of the state.  Even our campground had some damage done, mainly awning damage and large tree branches down.  The Topinabee / Indian River area was under a tornado warning for awhile on Saturday afternoon, so I’m glad that we were not up there.  The school in Cheboygan definitely looks like tornado damage but I haven’t heard the official…

A Stormy Sunday For Michigan

A Stormy Sunday For Michigan

This radar image was from this morning when a line of thunderstorms moved across the state, causing severe storm warnings in various places.   We were under a warning briefly, but there was nothing here that was severe.  Yes, there was plenty of thunder and lightning but rain amounts were only 0.15″.  I’m hearing that a tornado was spotted near Roscommon but haven’t heard of any damage reports.  Durand is shown in the lower portion of the image and we just…

Typical Summer Weather For Mid Michigan

Typical Summer Weather For Mid Michigan

We took a drive to Sleeper State Park in Caseville yesterday.  Caseville is in the thumb area of the state and was a favorite camping destination for us when my kids were little.  We hadn’t been there in years and I was curious as to how much of the beach was lost to the record water levels of Lake Huron.  Needless to say, much of the beach was gone.  There was only about 20-30 ft of sand left compared to…
