I have lived in Michigan all of my life and became very interested in the weather after the 1953 Flint tornado. This was one of the few EF5 tornadoes in our state's history (since records have been kept). Although we are not strangers to severe storms in Michigan, EF5 tornadoes are very rare. I live in an area where we rarely get a good thunderstorm, in fact, we haven't had one all summer. When I lived down by Detroit, they were frequent during the spring and summer months. I love experiencing the four seasons here in Michigan and I wouldn't live anywhere else.
Perfect Weather in Northern Michigan

Perfect Weather in Northern Michigan

Our week here is starting out with perfect weather, and it expected to remain so all this week.  We are so lucky.  My son came up yesterday, and my daughter will be joining us tomorrow.  It’s been a long time since we have all been here together.   Our morning is starting out with some cloud cover but that should clear up later on. Our 9 AM temp is 65°F, the humidity is 78% and the dew point is 58°F.  Winds…

A Beautiful Morning in Northern Michigan

A Beautiful Morning in Northern Michigan

After a very wet Wednesday, today is starting out with bright sunshine and comfortable temps.  Our drive up was dry until we got near Gaylord where we ran into a real gully washer.  It continued to rain the remaining trip but diminished to sprinkles by the time we reached the campground.  We were lucky that we didn’t have to set up in the pouring rain.  Today should be a winner and nice weather is expected to continue for the next…

Heading To The North Country – Michigan

Heading To The North Country – Michigan

We will be heading to northern Michigan is just a few hours.  Unfortunately, it appears that we’ll be setting up camp in the rain.  I’m hoping for some breaks but the radar isn’t looking too promising at this time.  Here at home, we have mostly cloudy skies and no rain so far.  Temps will be on the rise this week once again but the forecast for Topinabee-Indian River is showing highs mainly in the 70s.  That’s perfect for me.  After…

Another Comfortable Day in Mid Michigan

Another Comfortable Day in Mid Michigan

Today isn’t expected to be as cool as yesterday but it should still be quite pleasant.  The humidity has decreased considerably and that makes a lot of difference.  I noticed that the mosquitoes have been more plentiful over the past few days.  Up until now, they haven’t been that bad which is surprising with all the rain that we’ve had.  Tomorrow we head up north until the third of August.  They have been having strong storms there quite regularly and…

Cloudy but Cooler in Mid Michigan

Cloudy but Cooler in Mid Michigan

It is a cooler morning than what we have had and it really feels great.  We did get a little rain yesterday, 0.12 inches.  There are showers and thunderstorms in our forecast for this afternoon, then we could see some clearing.  Winds will turn to the north and bring some relief from these stifling temperatures.  I’m going to try to get out for a bike ride this afternoon, but will have to see what happens with the rain.  The Midwest…

The Heat Continues in Mid Michigan

The Heat Continues in Mid Michigan

This morning is very muggy and warm.  Showers and thunderstorms moved across the state overnight but we received very little rain.  There was just a trace in my gauge this morning at 8:30, but another shower is passing as I write this.  I can’t say that we really need the rain although the ground does dry out quickly with the heat.  Our highs have been in the upper 80s the past 3 days, and with the high dew points and…

Another Hot One in Mid Michigan

Another Hot One in Mid Michigan

Our skies have been mostly cloudy today although we have a little sun right now.  Temps are slightly cooler than yesterday and rain seemed to be a possibility this morning, but it all missed us.  Once again, it is just too hot to do anything outdoors and even just sitting out there is uncomfortable.  The dew point is quite high and that affects the feel of things more than the humidity.  At least I think so. Our 4 PM temperature…

Very July-Like in Mid Michigan

Very July-Like in Mid Michigan

For those wishing for hot weather, we finally got it!  Highs are expected to be in the mid to upper 80s all this week.  The chance for thunderstorms looms over us for the weekend but there is no break in the heat expected until early next week.  What makes it unbearable for me is that there is hardly any breeze.    I have said many times that I don’t like hot temperatures.  It takes all of my energy away. our 9:30…

The Beginning of a Beautiful Day in Mid Michigan

The Beginning of a Beautiful Day in Mid Michigan

Yesterday turned out to be a nice day after the morning rain subsided.  Today looks to be another winner with no rain in the forecast.  Our temperatures have cooled off to a comfortable level although  highs in the upper 80s are expected by week’s end.  Today will be the day to get things done outdoors while the cooler weather lasts. Our 9:30 AM temp is 69.6°F (21°C), the humidity is 61% and skies are clear.  Visibility is 10 miles and…

Not A Very Nice Sunday Morning in Mid Michigan

Not A Very Nice Sunday Morning in Mid Michigan

Today started out with a little sun, but it didn’t take long for the clouds to start rolling in.  I ran into a light shower on the way to church, but was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t pouring when I got out.  When I got home, I noticed that there was 0.13″ in my gauge that wasn’t there early this morning.  Now we have light fog with drizzle.  I hope that this doesn’t last all day.  I guess we…
