I have lived in Michigan all of my life and became very interested in the weather after the 1953 Flint tornado. This was one of the few EF5 tornadoes in our state's history (since records have been kept). Although we are not strangers to severe storms in Michigan, EF5 tornadoes are very rare. I live in an area where we rarely get a good thunderstorm, in fact, we haven't had one all summer. When I lived down by Detroit, they were frequent during the spring and summer months. I love experiencing the four seasons here in Michigan and I wouldn't live anywhere else.
Another Day Of Dense Fog . . . .

Another Day Of Dense Fog . . . .

We had heavy fog most of our Wednesday, and it remains this morning.  The dense fog advisory expires at 11 AM.  I haven’t seen fog like this in a long time and visibility was less than a mile much of yesterday.  I hope it is gone this afternoon.  The good thing is that temps were very mild and we lost quite a bit of snow. Our 9:30 AM temperature is 34°F (1°C), the humidity is 100%, and winds are calm. …

Fog To Start Our Day . . . .

Fog To Start Our Day . . . .

We were lucky yesterday and didn’t get any freezing rain.   All the snow and ice on my deck has turned to slush and it shovels easily.  We still have about 2 inches of snowpack and I expect that to be gone by late tomorrow.  Extended forecasts are telling us that February will be mild, and I hope they are right.  I’m just not cut out for these single digit and teen temperatures.  This morning began with dense fog and it…

A Big Mess Out There Today . . . . . .

A Big Mess Out There Today . . . . . .

What began as snow this morning, changed to rain for this afternoon.  I’m happy that none of it froze, at least not yet.  I’m able to remove some of the ice from my deck and I’m happy about that.  The next few days should see highs in the 40s, so I’m not expecting any of what we’re getting to freeze.  Most of the snow should be gone by the weekend. Our 4:15 PM temperature is 35°F (2°C), the humidity is…

Winter Weather Advisory In Effect . . . .

Winter Weather Advisory In Effect . . . .

We are expecting a winter mix bringing snow this afternoon.  My area seems to be right on the line between rain and snow, and I’m hoping for all snow.  We still have about an inch of ice under our existing snowpack which I was hoping to be rid of.  We don’t need anymore.  We have about 3 inches of snow on the ground with about an inch of ice under that.  There is light snow falling right now but not…

Slightly Warmer . . . . . .

Slightly Warmer . . . . . .

We have a welcome warmup coming this week.  We should see temps into the 40s by next weekend, and hopefully, get rid of this ice.  We have about 3 inches of snowpack, and that’s on top of about 1 inch of ice, so exact measurements are hard to get.  Looking at the extended prediction for February, it appears that February should be on the mild side.  At least we can hope . . . . Our 10:30 AM temperature is…

Snowy And Blowy . . . . .

Snowy And Blowy . . . . .

Yesterday was quite nice for a day in January.  Temperatures were warmer than what they had been, and winds were quite light.  Today is a different story.  We are back to temperatures in the teens and a significant wind chill.  We do have warmer weather to look forward to next week, so that will make today more bearable. Our 10:15 AM temperature is 17°F, the humidity is 89%, and skies are cloudy.  Winds are from the N at 7-12 mph,…

A Little Warmer With Snow . . . . .

A Little Warmer With Snow . . . . .

We have snow in our forecast once again, and what we got three days ago is still there.  At least it is much warmer today, but not enough for anything to melt.  Our area is expecting at least two inches tonight and tomorrow.  Lake effect will be coming off of Lake Huron for a change, so the east side and thumb areas of the state will be most impacted.  I’m sure that makes the folks near Lake Michigan happy.  I…

Still, No Warmup . . . . .

Still, No Warmup . . . . .

Our forecast is calling for a little sun today, but haven’t seen any yet.  Temperatures remain much below where they should be and I’m really tired of it.  We still have about 2 to 2.5 inches of snow cover and I’m hoping for a day that’s warm enough to melt the ice on my deck.  My dog hopes so too.  Her little feet get so cold going out for just a few minutes.  Looking ahead at the forecast, it doesn’t…

Another Frigid Day . . . .

Another Frigid Day . . . .

Once again, our temperatures will do well to make it into the mid teens.  Add the wind chill, and it feels below zero.  This is another day that I’m thankful that I don’t have to go anywhere.  Temperatures should rise to above average in another  week or so, and I can hardly wait.  Give me a foot of snow and temps in the 40’s and I’d be much happier. We are under a wind chill advisory from 7 PM tonight…

Frigid Temps Continue . . . .

Frigid Temps Continue . . . .

It was 1 degree when I got up this morning, and it hasn’t warmed up significantly since then.  The sun is trying to peek out but a thin cloud cover remains.  At least we don’t have the strong winds today so it is a bit more bearable.  I hate the cold more than the snow, and the south isn’t being spared either.  This mass of arctic air can’t move on soon enough to suit me. Our 3 PM temperature is…
