I have lived in Michigan all of my life and became very interested in the weather after the 1953 Flint tornado. This was one of the few EF5 tornadoes in our state's history (since records have been kept). Although we are not strangers to severe storms in Michigan, EF5 tornadoes are very rare. I live in an area where we rarely get a good thunderstorm, in fact, we haven't had one all summer. When I lived down by Detroit, they were frequent during the spring and summer months. I love experiencing the four seasons here in Michigan and I wouldn't live anywhere else.
Hot With Air Quality Alert – Mid Michigan

Hot With Air Quality Alert – Mid Michigan

Once again our clear, blue sky looks more grey than blue.  The wildfire smoke from Canada is moving over us again, causing breathing problems for those with asthma and allergies.  Thankfully, no one in my family has either.  Right now, it doesn’t seem too bad but it always seems to get worse later in the day.  They issued our advisory yesterday, but I haven’t heard any today.  Maybe it won’t be as bad as they thought.  There were some thunderstorms…

Hot And Dry For Our Monday – Mid Michigan

Hot And Dry For Our Monday – Mid Michigan

Today is the beginning of a hot week.  Temperatures will reach into the 90s by the week’s end.  Today’s high should reach well into the  80s and we are still without AC.  Hopefully, they’ll be able to fix it tomorrow.  Our AC unit is very old and we may need to have a new one installed.  Whichever it is, I just hope it doesn’t take too long.  Multiple thunderstorms developed yesterday afternoon but they all missed us.  The same is…

Very Warm On This August Saturdy

Very Warm On This August Saturdy

Although we weren’t really expecting any rain today. I’m seeing some starting to form to our north and south on radar.  Scattered thunderstorms are in our forecast, so we may see a little rain today.  Our AC is not working so we are keeping the house closed up to keep the hot air out.  It’s doing a pretty good job.  Thankfully, we have good insulation.  Right now our indoor temp is 76°F, not bad considering that it’s 8°1F outdoors.  I’m…

A Lovely Friday After The Storms

A Lovely Friday After The Storms

Although I was up in Traverse City yesterday, I heard about the storms which rolled through southern Michigan.  One car dealership in Davison had every car on his lot damaged by baseball-sized hail.  Other areas had wind damage although I haven’t heard the extent of it.  My son was home and said that there were winds so strong that it blew my rain gauge sideways.  Luckily, he spotted it right away and went out and straightened it.  Gust’s up to…

Northern Michigan Storms

Northern Michigan Storms

Thunderstorms began early in Cheboygan and continued as we headed for Traverse City.  The storm we drove through near Elmira, was a real gully washer, but by the time we reached TC, most of the rain was over.  Skies cleared through the afternoon but severe storms pummeled our home turf.  They were under a severe thunderstorm warning and the radar looked serious.  I haven’t been in touch with anyone at home for damage reports.  We will be heading home…

More Smoke In The Air On This Sunday

More Smoke In The Air On This Sunday

We are once again under an air quality alert from the Canadian wildfires.  We’ll be heading up to Cheboygan and Traverse City for the next week.  We haven’t been there since we sold our trailer and parted ways with the campground.  I hope that there will be no smoke up there.  Today is a bit windy and there is a slight chance for some thunderstorms, but I’m really not expecting to see any rain today.  Temperatures will be close to…

Overnight Thunderstorms For Our Saturday

Overnight Thunderstorms For Our Saturday

We had a rare, loud thunderstorm about 2:30 this morning.  It seemed good and we picked up another 0.4″ of rain.  I just received a weather alert that air quality will not be good tomorrow.  Seems that the Canadian smoke will make another pass over our area.  I wish Canada would get the rain that is flooding Vermont, and put those darn fires out.  I’m sure the people of Canada wish the same.  Today shouldn’t be too bad of a…

Flooding Rain In Mid Michigan

Flooding Rain In Mid Michigan

Yesterday was one of the stormiest days that we have had in a long time.  The rain began in the afternoon and was light from the beginning;  later, when the storms, which produced tornadoes in Chicago reached us, the sky really opened up.  The heavy rain began around 9 PM and didn’t stop until after 11:30 PM.  There was 3.08″ in my rain gauge this morning, and many other areas not too far from me, recorded over 4″.  That’s the…

Storms In Our Forecast – Mid Michigan

Storms In Our Forecast – Mid Michigan

Yesterday brought us no rain, but there were isolated storm cells that formed over parts of the state.  Several severe storm warnings were issued as well as one tornado warning.  None, however, happened in my area.  We are being told to expect much of the same this afternoon.  It was hot and muggy yesterday and it should be a bit cooler today.  Hopefully no severe weather for us but we could sure use the rain. Our 10:30 AM temperature is…

Storms Possible Today – Mid Michigan

Storms Possible Today – Mid Michigan

I’m seeing storms popping up on radar, but none heading our way as yet.  They are all to our north and east.  Hopefully, we’ll get some rain this afternoon.  It is quite breezy and it feels like a storm could spring up.  It won’t be quite as hot as yesterday and the wind will keep it comfortable.  Not a bad day at all. Our 2:15 PM temperature is 86°F (30°C), the humidity is 50%, and skies are mostly…
