I have lived in Michigan all of my life and became very interested in the weather after the 1953 Flint tornado. This was one of the few EF5 tornadoes in our state's history (since records have been kept). Although we are not strangers to severe storms in Michigan, EF5 tornadoes are very rare. I live in an area where we rarely get a good thunderstorm, in fact, we haven't had one all summer. When I lived down by Detroit, they were frequent during the spring and summer months. I love experiencing the four seasons here in Michigan and I wouldn't live anywhere else.
Possibly Our Last Summer-Like Day – Mid Michigan

Possibly Our Last Summer-Like Day – Mid Michigan

My picture shows what our sky looks like with the smoke from the western wildfires.  It isn’t expected to affect our temperatures today, however.  Expected highs will be in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees.  Looking forward to next week, the highs on some days will struggle to reach 60F.  We’ll be going to our campground for the last time tomorrow, and will stay until the end of the month.  It’s time to pack everything away once again for…

Smoke Filled Skies But Otherwise Clear – Mid Michigan

Smoke Filled Skies But Otherwise Clear – Mid Michigan

It is very chilly this morning and skies are clear, but smoke from the western fires give the appearance of a light layer of clouds.  I turned the furnace on and let it run one cycle just to get the chill out of the air.  We’ll be heading up north for the last time in a few days, then camping season will be over for another year.  I enjoy going up there in September.  Many of the campers will already…

Feels Like Fall In Mid Michigan

Feels Like Fall In Mid Michigan

Yesterday wasn’t a bad day although a bit windy.  We didn’t see much sun but temperatures were quite mild.  Today will be a bit cooler with highs only expected in the mid 60s.  We are starting to see a little color in the trees and bushes now and there is a heavy dew every morning.  It won’t be long until that heavy dew will be frost.  The flower gardens are losing their color and the vegetable garden is almost done…

An Appreciated Warm Up For Mid Michigan

An Appreciated Warm Up For Mid Michigan

There is rain moving in from the west but so far, it has stayed to our west and north.  Forecasts are calling for it to move into our area later today.  I hope it just misses us entirely.  We don’t need anymore rain.  I wish we could sent it to the western US where those terrible wildfires are.  I just read where four people were arrested for deliberately setting four of them.  Why would anyone do that? Our 10:15 AM…

More Seasonable Weather In Mid Michigan

More Seasonable Weather In Mid Michigan

After several days of wet, gloomy, chilly weather, today will be more typical for mid September.  Although the temperatures will still be a bit below normal, the sun should make up for it. I’ve been up north at our campground for the past week, and we have no WiFi there, so I haven’t been able to post my blog for awhile.  I tried posting here the past few days and this site didn’t seem to be working as it should. …

Thunderstorms For Our Tuesday – Mid Michigan

Thunderstorms For Our Tuesday – Mid Michigan

I’m a bit late with this blog today but have been busy all morning.  We’re heading up to the campground tomorrow for the holiday weekend, and will be up there for a week.  I’m hoping that the WiFi is working but it probably isn’t.  The new owner of the campground doesn’t seem to think that it’s a priority.  The extended forecast is calling for some very cool weather for the weekend, which isn’t unusual for northern Michigan.  I’d rather it…

After Two Days Of Thunderstorms, Cooler Weather Has Arrived – Mid Michigan

After Two Days Of Thunderstorms, Cooler Weather Has Arrived – Mid Michigan

Another line of thunderstorms passed over us late last night leaving us with an additional 0.96″ of rain.  Our total rain amount for the past two days is 2.53″.  It moved quite slowly from the NW to the SE bringing with it quite a light show and severe weather to some areas.  We lucked out with just the rain and plenty of lightning. It did put an end to the hot, very humid weather and the next week is expected…

Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain For Our Friday – Mid Michigan

Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain For Our Friday – Mid Michigan

Thunderstorms began around 1:30 this morning and continued all night.  We had a brief reprieve around 8 AM, but now the rain has started up again.  There was 1.55″ in my gauge at 8 AM, but it has been raining steady since then.  My weather station is showing over 2 inches  in the past 48 hours, so I think that we have enough rain for awhile. Our 9 AM temperature is 68°F (20°C), the humidity is 99%, and skies are…

A Sunny Start To Our Thursday – Mid Michigan

A Sunny Start To Our Thursday – Mid Michigan

After a very wet Wednesday morning, the skies cleared by mid afternoon and the heat returned.  We received a total of 0.80″ of rain which was badly needed and the chance for more rain continues through the weekend.  It is expected to cool off over the next several days and hopefully, this is the end to this very hot weather. Our 10:45 AM temperature is 81°F (27°C), the humidity is 75%, and the dew point is 71°F (22°C).  The heat…

Heavy Rain For Our Wednesday – Mid Michigan

Heavy Rain For Our Wednesday – Mid Michigan

They said that we would get rain but I didn’t expect what we’re getting.  We’ve been getting moderate to heavy rain since about 4 AM and there is no let-up at this time.  My weather station is showing 0.69″ since 3:48 AM.  Some areas have already gotten over an inch and I think we will also by the time it ends.  Radar is showing that it won’t happen very soon.  The state really needed this.  Our last good rain here…
