Yesterday was cloudy but warm enough to rid us of most of our snow and ice. Then in the late afternoon, our precip began as freezing mist which changed over to fine snow shortly after. As the night wore on, the snowflakes got bigger and it started to pile up quickly. It was over by 11:30 PM after dropping about 4.5 inches of snow. This morning is sunny but very cold. My picture pretty much tells what we can expect today. We had heavy rain most of the night and there was 0.82″ in my gauge. My county (Shiawassee) is in the advisory area and we are expecting 3-6 inches of snow by tonight. Our snow cover this morning is down to about 30% and temperatures are expected to drop creating ice on all surfaces that are wet. With all the snow that we have, we’ve been putting food out for the deer. They come about 4-5 times a day to see what’s out there for them. I enjoy watching them and the birds. Winter is always such a dead time of year, and seeing wildlife moving around livens it up a bit. Unfortunately, there is a winter storm developing and heading in our direction. Computer models are ranging from showing it remaining to our south to bringing rain or freezing rain to my area. I got out this morning and measured our actual snow pack and it is now 7.3 inches. That’s down 3.2 inches from right after the storm last Wednesday. I don’t think that there was much melting but more settling than anything. I noticed some thawing yesterday but not much. We did briefly get over the freezing mark earlier but it didn’t last long. We should see much warmer temps over the next three days before the next Alberta clipper arrives…
It actually feels balmy out there today. Even the wind doesn’t seem that cold. I’m hoping that these Alberta clippers are finished for the year but I’m probably asking too much.
